for watching. iowa kicked off the 2012 election in january. today it was the first state where people could cast their votes in person for the general election. the race is on. the race has been tight in iowa, but president obama has the momentum. the latest ten-day poll average from "real clear politics" shows president obama with nearly a five-point lead. iowa voters were out in full force starting at 7:00 this morning. one election commissioner said this could be a record-breaking year. >> this was by far the busiest opening day we've had in the ten years i've been in the office. we were thinking 100 people. 100 would have been a good number. that's what it was four years ago. we're well past that. we're not to noon yet. >> look at the early voting numbers from 2008 to see how big a record breaker it could be this year. 2008, 33% of all ballots were cast before election day. early voting favored barack obama over john mccain by 18 points. 58% to 40%. this year, 27 states and washington, d.c., will have early in-person voting prior to election day. the campaigns are estimating an early vo

. they said that the president and the administration have not wanted to admit a terror link in an election year around 9/11. they say that intelligence warning of such an attack was potentially missed and that the administration frankly dropped the ball. the white house fought back against that but in subsequent days they said it was self-evident changing their tune somewhat that it was a terrorist attack. and now an official release from the spokesman for the director of national intelligence, i'll read a little bit more of which you've already read, alex. walker of salon.com, melissa harris perry, and buzz feed editor in chief ben smith. the election is in 39 days but early voting has begun in more than half of the country. which could account ultimately for a third of all votes cast this year. so it's probably not a good sign the republicans are still pointing fingers openly questioning governor romney's strategy. that is bringing him to pennsylvania at this very hour. that's a state where he was down by 12 points according to a poll from quinnipiac university. other polls out show president obama and romney locked in a tight fight. according to the nbc news/"wall street journal"/marist poll, president obama has a slight lead in nevada and north carolina but basically within the margin of error. and in virginia, a new poll from suffolk university/nbc 12 puts obama slightly ahead of romney, also within the margin of error. so, how can romney turn it around? it may not be easy. some people within this romney campaign have concluded he's not actually a very good politician. here's what one romney official explained to politico. he said -- no

. republican voters are more interested in this election than democrats. the president has a larger lead. he is up seven. the problem for him is a lack of enthusiasm of hispanics and young voters. romney has to do things to make people substantially change the way people feel about him. his approval rating is still under water. the lowest for any presidential nominee at this point in time other than george h.w. bush in 1992. romney is out with his second straight to camera ad in the direct effort to undo damage of the remarks. >> more americans live in poverty than when president obama took office. we should measure our compassion by how many fellow americans are able to get good paying jobs and not how many are on welfare. >> look at these numbers. by a whopping 51 to 28 voters say what they have heard about romney has made them feel more unfavorably there is still a few yellow flags for the president. more people disapprove of how he has handled the situation in libya and egypt than approve. if you want to understand why the president is leading look at this number, economic optimism. 57%

for politics. it's 37 days until the election day. three days until the first presidential debate. this morning, a stark reminder of the longest war in american history, the american military death toll inside afghanistan has now reached 2,000, let's get to that developing news, nbc's tia abawi is in kabul, afghanistan, mike taibbi standing by. what happened with the latest attack. >> hi there, craig, well this occurred yesterday just west of the capital, kabul. it happened at a checkpoint on highway 1, apparently a new checkpoint where americans were there apparently training afghan security forces there were american service members as well as contractors at that checkpoint. there were approached by afghan soldiers, apparently a conversation ensued and then an afghan soldier then fired at the americans, killing one of the service members and a contractor. a contractor that was there to train the afghan security forces. the americans then fired back at the afghans, killing at least three of them this makes it the 38th insider attack that we've seen in afghanistan this year alone. killing at le
